hystrix-patula-1
Hystrix patula (Bottlebrush Grass) - 1 gal
Bottlebrush Grass is named for its distinctive, bristly seed heads which resemble bottle brushes. They first appear green, then briefly red if grown in a sunny location, before turning straw-colored. The stalks grow up to 4' tall, sometimes slightly taller if in moist, sunny conditions. This grass is a cool-season bunchgrass which can tolerate growing under the filtered light and drier conditions of deciduous open woods. It isn't bothered by the juglone toxin produced by Black Walnuts, and while deer may nibble on it, it is rarely damaged by them. This is an attractive choice for erosion control, as it can form loose, open stands by self seeding. Many birds eat the seeds and the foliage is host to the Northern Pearly Eye.Sources:
Native Ferns, Moss, & Grasses by William Cullina
Missouri Botanical Garden
Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center
Master Gardeners of Northern Virginia
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0787/7092/9905/files/4206fe8d-023e-4be2-b46f-9f60d295183d_bc467fe5-c118-4349-804e-af0ac30cff9b.jpg?v=1776371546
