Aster [Symphyotrichum] obl. 'Raydon's Favorite' (Raydon's Favorite' Aromatic Aster) - 2 gal

Raydon's Favorite' Aromatic Aster

Raydon's Favorite' is a cultivated variety of our native Aromatic Aster (Aster oblongifolius). This selection is more compact and floriferous than the straight species. Its form is densely branching, resulting in a mounded globe shape. It creeps slowly from underground rhizomes, but it is not highly competitive. It is adaptable to many different growing conditions, but prefers full sun and lean soils 'Raydon's Favorite’ was one of seven asters (out of 119 varieties) to receive the top rating in the Aster Evaluation Trial at the Chicago Botanic Garden: "An abundance of blue-purple flowers are produced over a long period beginning in early August; in fact, precocious flowers often pop up a few weeks before blooming begins in earnest. The billowy habit of ‘Raydon’s Favorite’ has an informal look that suits it well to mass plantings and naturalizing. Aromatic Aster is a good alternative to New England Aster because it is more resistant to powdery mildew." (Top-rated asters displayed consistently strong habits, superior flower production, excellent disease resistance, and full winter hardiness throughout a six-year evaluation term.)Sources:

Plant Care & Installation Quick-Guide
Plant Care & Installation Quick-Guide

Proper acclimation and installation are key to your plant's success. Please cross-reference these tips with your plant's specific ID tags:

·
Pre-Planting: Store plants in a light-appropriate area on soil or grass (avoid hot concrete or asphalt) and water daily until the soil is saturated and the pot feels heavy. If temperatures drop below 30°F, move pots to a garage or cover them to prevent root freeze.

·
Installation: Dig a hole matching the depth of the pot, remove the fabric container, and ensure the plant’s crown or root flare is level with the ground. Fill gaps with soil, water heavily, and apply 2 inches of mulch—keeping it clear of the stem.

·
Ongoing Care: Check moisture daily by feeling 1–2 inches into the soil; water deeply at the base if the soil feels dry or warm. Newly installed plants require frequent watering (up to 3–4 times weekly in heat) until fully established, which can take a few months for perennials and up to two years for trees.
